First Christian Church

There’s an old story about a man who came to church with his family. As they were driving home afterwards he was complaining about everything. He said,  “The music was too loud. The sermon was too long. The announcements were unclear. The building was hot. The people were unfriendly.” He went on and on, complaining about virtually everything. Finally, his very observant son said,  “Dad, you’ve got to admit it wasn’t a bad show for just a dollar.”

We can chuckle at this story, but the truth is, going to church should be about a lot more than just going to church! It’s not about being entertained. The attitude we take with us to church makes a big difference as to what our worship experience will be like. The Psalmist wrote: I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord” (Psalm 122:1).This Old Testament passage speaks of being glad at the prospect of going into God’s house. It’s like on Sunday morning waking up and hearing your wife or husband say, “Let’s go to church!” and you feeling an exhilarating sense of joy. “Yes! I want to go to church! I want to sing songs of praise to God and I want to hear what the preacher has to say today! I am excited at the thought of attending worship this morning!  I’ll go wake up the kids!”You see, the attitude we take to worship is what makes the difference.

A quote from Christian author Bridget Willard helps put it into perspective. She writes: “Church isn’t where you meet. Church isn’t a building. Church is what you do. Church is who you are. Church is the human outworking of the person of Jesus Christ. Let’s not go to Church, let’s be the Church.”

We gather together every Sunday as the church. We come together to worship God and to be equipped to go out and be the Church. What we do here can be likened to what football players do in the huddle. They prepare for what will happen when they leave the huddle, when the game starts again. They gather to prepare for the next play, we gather to prepare ourselves for what life will be bringing our way in the week to come.

Let’s all meet at First Christian and get ready to really be the church every day of the week!

I’ll see you Sunday!
